At the heart of this collection is a rare, hand-picked Saemidori sencha from Tenryu, Shizuoka, cultivated by Kaneta Otaen, a distinguished tea grower renowned throughout Japan for its award-winning teas.
Carefully hand-picked, this exceptional tea is prized for its rich, powerful umami and deep, full-bodied flavor. A rare and luxurious tea, it offers a truly memorable taste of Shizuoka.
A Small Makinohara-Yaki Tea Jar with Tea-Tree Ash Glaze
Created by Hidetoshi Sugawara, a ceramic artist based in Shimada, Shizuoka, this small tea jar is a unique work of craftsmanship.
It was created alongside a special Makinohara-yaki tea jar made to hold tea presented to the Imperial Household.
Its distinctive chaju-bai-yu glaze incorporates ash from tea trees, transforming the natural materials of tea cultivation into a beautiful ceramic finish. The result is a tea jar that embodies the deep connection between Shizuoka’s tea culture and its traditional crafts.
Preserving the Legacy of the Historic Tea Jar Processions
Inspired by the historic Ocha-tsubo Dochu tea jar processions, a tradition that flourished during the era of Tokugawa Ieyasu, this collection reimagines an important part of Japan’s tea heritage for the modern age.
In the past, precious tea was transported in special tea jars. Today, the spirit of that tradition lives on in a creation that carries not merely tea, but the culture, history, and craftsmanship of Shizuoka itself.
Each tea jar becomes a vessel for a new story, connecting the legacy of the past with the people who will cherish it in the future.
